Abstract

This lecture will provide a brief introduction to the history of neuropsychology, beginning with its scientific origins through the evolution of clinical neuropsychology as a professional discipline. This will include investigations into origins of the term “neuropsychology” and the identity of the first clinical neuropsychologist. There will also be a review of many of the top names in the history of neuropsychology and the initiation of the field’s professional organizations. There will be a focus on the development of neuropsychology in New York with a discussion of the course of professional and political events twenty years ago that led to the development of the New York State Association of Neuropsychology (NYSAN).

About the Presenter

Dr. Barr is a retired Professor of Neurology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine with more than 30 years of experience in clinical practice, training, and research in the field of neuropsychology. He spent more than 20 years as the Director of the Neuropsychology Division in the Department of Neurology at the NYU-Langone Medical Center. He has served on committees and boards for various neuropsychological and psychological organizations, including a term as President of the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (SCN). His research activities have focused on studies of epilepsy and sport-related concussion. He has served as a consultant to a number of professional and collegiate sports teams and is now in private practice focusing on clinical and forensic neuropsychology.

CE Credits: 1.0 CE credit (APA/NYSED) available. Completion of an evaluation is required in order to receive credit.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the origins of neuropsychology including its scientific foundation, early use of the term, and candidates for the first clinical neuropsychologist.
  2. Provide the names of at least three New York neuropsychologists who made substantial contributions to the history of neuropsychology.
  3. Summarize the development of neuropsychology organizations including INS, NAN, and AACN.
  4. Explain how issues regarding the use of psychology technicians in New York State led to the development of NYSAN.
