Summary
This lecture will examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on learning loss and its significant implications for neuropsychological assessment and diagnosis in the post-pandemic era. We will begin with an overview of the pandemic's scope, focusing on school closures and educational disruptions. The discussion will highlight the variability in student experiences, emphasizing factors that either mitigated or exacerbated learning loss. We will explore how these disruptions have altered developmental trajectories, affecting cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Special emphasis will be placed on how neuropsychologists must adapt their assessment and diagnostic practices to account for these changes, ensuring accurate identification of learning and developmental challenges. Attendees will gain insights into refining their approaches to better support students' academic recovery and overall well-being, equipping them to address the unique needs of students in the post-pandemic world.
About the Presenter
Laura Phillips, PsyD, ABPdN is a board-certified pediatric neuropsychologist who recently opened a private practice in New York City. She serves on the Board of Directors of the New York State Association of Neuropsychology (NYSAN) and the American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology (AAPdN).
Lindsay Plunkett, PhD is a clinical neuropsychologist operating out of her private practice on Long Island. In addition to her practice, she is one of two team neuropsychologists for the New York Islanders. She serves on the Board of Directors and is co-chair of the Legislative Committee within the New York State Association of Neuropsychology (NYSAN).
Linda LaMarca, Ph.D., ABPP, is dual board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology and Pediatric Neuropsychology. She owns and operates a group practice, Key Insights Neuropsychology and Counseling, in Glen Head, NY. She has served on NYSAN’s Pediatric Interest and Professional Affairs Committee (PIPAC) for ten years.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to:
- Describe the variability in student experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Identify the factors that mitigated or exacerbated the impact of educational disruption on students' academic and social-emotional development in K-12 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated school closures.
- Apply your understanding of these mitigating or exacerbating factors to a dynamic decision-making process around diagnosis and treatment for individual patients in your neuropsychological practice.
- Incorporate altered developmental trajectories into diagnostic conceptualization.
- Think critically about how to use existing norms in the context of altered developmental trajectories and attenuated learning as a result of the pandemic.
